2011-02-24 - Things things and more things

Oh right I have this thing, I should write things on this thing.

To start off with I haven't gotten any angry letters from the school. I take this to mean that either A) They haven't checked up on the site or B) I'm okay to keep it here. Also speaking of school I am overworked and anti-paid. I suppose I should take it as a good thing that in the real world I could get actual money for doing some of this stuff instead of paying to do it; It's actually rather fun. The two classes I really have to work for are my CMPE and PHIL class. The CMPE class is a design project which is very interesting. We are building a sort of LED screen for the Marshall McLuhan centennial thing. I'm not entirely sure what we are going to do for it, the main problem being that our clients don’t really know what they want. It’s the artist syndrome I think to imagine everything in multiple and increasingly weird ways. When I heard about the LED screen I imagined a screen, a nice normal screen with decent resolution and colour depth and all those things that make a nice monitor. The artists apparently imaged a weird abstract thing that showed splotches in some unspecified pattern. Oh well, I think part of this project is to get students used to working with clients that know nothing. The PHIL class is all about conversations and group conversations and things. The Prof seems to enjoy just sitting back and letting people babble at each other, which I admit can be quite fun. Though I think PHIL is going on my list of "Subjects that are fun but get really annoying when you have to do homework on them" along with history.

Reading week is the best week of the year, sleep late, read lots, great fun. The only problem is that Profs like to ensure you have work to do during reading week. It's half over and I still need to figure out some Ethernet, SPI and my PHIL readings. I'd also like to look into the cost of renting a website and/or minecraft server. I originally planned to host this site on a computer in my home but it turns out that Telus blocks port 80 so you can't accept HTTP connections. So unless I want to try and find another ISP it's rent or nothing. Oh well, that's life.
